5-SPEED TRANSMISSION CONVERSION KITs
One of the very best modifications you can do to your 2002 is to install a 5-Speed Overdrive Transmission. Our complete kit is based on the proven design as described in the factory BMW 'Blue Books' (yes, BMW recognized the benefits of an overdrive 5-speed gearbox in the 2002). We offer a complete kit or individual parts. Imagine driving at your highway speed and the motor is running 800 RPM lower than it does with your current 4-speed transmission.

The typical conversion involves sourcing and replacing your 4-speed with a Getrag 245 5-speed overdrive transmission from a 1979 to 1982 BMW E21M, 320i, or 320iS. Alternatively, a Getrag 240 from a 1983 320i or 320iS can be used. Either transmission HAS THE CAPACITY TO bolt to the M10 engine and each has a mechanical speedometer cable drive gear, allowing your 2002 speedometer to function as intended. (The Getrag 240 from a 1894-1985 E30, 318, or 318iS can be used but DOES NOT INCLUDE A mechanical speedOMETER CABLE drive GEAR).

The Aardvarc 5-speed kits allow for the installation of a GeTrag 245 or Getrag 240 transmission into a 2002 with a 4-speed manual transmission. Aardvarc kits do not include the transmission itself. The 2002 owner is encouraged to source a transmission from Aardvarc or others. Our supply is usually very low due to both demand and AVAILABILITY, but please inquire if you are interested.
For more information about our kits, please select either “Getrag 245” or “Getrag 240.” Note the 245 has a 3-piece aluminum case, and the 240 has a 2-piece case like your stock 2002 4-speed.
OUR DESIGN
We feature new mounting tabs mounted further back to accommodate the longer gearbox - tabs can be welded or bolted to the tunnel.
Other kits have cantilevered brackets, but we're not a fan. They put too much stress on the original tabs, show evidence of vibration and tearing metal with those set-ups.
